Speech #2 outline

Problem: CTE is a major problem in sports, specifically in Iowa City. There is college, little league and high school football. So this affects a lot of people. More than just the players but the family and future kids wanting to play. Along with the vast amounts of crowds that the college team brings in, which in turn boosts businesses profits. Solution: Plastic helmets have been around for 78 years. They still have not innovated them enough to efficiently protect against concussions. So the answer, leather helmets. Yes, this sounds counter intuitive. But if they have not found a solution in 78 years, maybe it is time to take a step back. Look at rugby. They have "helmets" called scrum caps that players supposedly play more dangerously in thinking that they are protecting their heads. These scrum caps however have no effect on player safety. This is very similar to football helmets now. Players believe that their heads are protected so they will put themselves in plays tha...

Sample proposals

Course requirement extortion  Strengths: This proposal gives many examples and statistics on textbooks. Also, all of the issues, and solutions are very clearly stated. Weaknesses: The conclusion was very weak. The proposal is not very organized. Off campus purchases Strengths: Sub-headings helped a lot. Problem was good and understandable. Weaknesses: Uses first person. It could also use a bit more information. Nuclear Power Strengths: Varying scholarly and normal sources. Very in depth on the topic. Weaknesses: It was fairly choppy. Not a very good conclusion. Rating: 1. Course extortion, 2. Off campus, 3. Nuclear Power.

Speech #2 topic proposal

My second speech is going to be focusing on football helmets and how to prevent CTE. The focus will be centered around the university football team and surrounding little league and high school teams. This is a huge problem as it is shaping the way football is being played today. There have been numerous rules enacted for player safety because of this. Also, many parents are trying to turn their kids away from football in fear of them receiving a head injury. My main focus will be to address the issues of CTE, how it happens and why it is such a bad thing, it not only affects the players but many others. Then I will state my solution. My solution may sound counter intuitive, but the NFL should have less protection in their helmets. While this situation seems like it only affects NFL players, it affects practically everyone. From NFL players, to the average viewer, to the kids that want to play football. The NFL is also a multi billion dollar industry that spends a lot of its free t...

Speech 2

This assignment asks us to utilize all of the tools that we have learned so far in Rhetoric class. For example, we have learned how to convey our information through statistics in graphs, personal experiences, purpose, audience, etc... We are to pick out a topic and convince the audience that this is urgent and needs instant action. After, we should pick out a solution and explain why the solution will solve the problem. Along with the speech, we need to have a reflection, which seem short of like an abstract. In it, we need to outline our "plan of attack" for the presentation. Also, explain the tools I used. The length of this speech is a little longer than the first speech that we had made. Some questions, Is the reflection similar to the abstract? What should the format of the speech be?
